Operating System for Desktop and Laptop

The OS is the main program that runs on a computer system and manages computer hardware and software resources. Operating system that are mostly used in desktop and laptop computer are-

  • DOS (Disk Operating System
  • Windows Operating System
  • Linux Operating System
  • Mac Operating System
Disk Operating System-

DOS is an operating system that runs from a hard disk drive. PC-DOS was first widely used OS in Personal computer running on Intel 8086 16-bit processors. It was developed for IBM by Microsoft Corporation, which also produced its own almost identical version called MS-DOS. The last version of MS-DOS is 6.22 and now it is part of Windows OS. The DOS commands are separated into two types-

1. Internal Commands- 

These are directly executable commands which are part of the core of the operating system.

 2. External Commands- 

These commands are separated from the original program, so they are known as additional    programs.

Windows Operating System-

Windows is the most popular GUI operating system developed by Microsoft corporation. Microsoft has launched many separate version of Windows OS for both server and stand alone. Some popular version of Windows OS are Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10. The Windows 10 is the latest version of Windows series.

Linux Operating System-

Linux is an open source popular OS for PC and laptop users around the world. It is an independent portable true multitasking os and includes virtual memory, shared libraries, demand loading, memory management, TCP/IP networking and other important features. This OS was initially created by Linus Torvalds, in 1991 and in 1994 the first version of Linux kernel is released on internet. It has nearby all the features present in Unix OS. Linux is generally provided two types of GUI one is KDE and other is known as Gnome. Other interface like CUI is also available.

Mac Operating System-

Mac OS is a series of GUI OS developed and marketed y Apple Inc. since 2001. It is second most widely used desktop OS, after Microsoft Windows. Mac OS X provide 3D desktop experience. OS X has a modular design intended to make it easier to add new features to the OS in the future. It run UNIX applications as well as older Mac applications.
