Table Of Contents

Writer's Table of contents feature Let's you build an automated table of contents from the heading in your document. It is a necessary index which is needed for every user when dealing with long document, Book drafts etc. These Entries are automatically Generated As hyperlinks in the table. Table of Index which gives user easy access To any location in the document. whenever changes user made to the text of heading in the body of the Document or the page on Which the heading appears, those changes automatically appear in the table of contents when it is updated.

Creating the table of Contents

A table of content ( TOC) is created from the headings of your document. Before your insert the TOC, you make sure that you have applied headings and styled them consistently. For example, you can use the heading 1 Style for chapter title and the Heading 2 and heading 3 for chapter Subheadings.

For Inserting TOC follow the step below:

1)) Put the cursor where you want to add the TOC.

2)) Go to Insert > Table of Contents and Index > Table of content, index or Bibliography.

3)) Now, the Index or table of content dialog will appears On the left side of this window You can see a preview of TOC

4)) Press' OK to insert the TOC and continue. Now the TOC is automatically created and appears with a gray background color around the text.

Editing a table of contents

After creating the table of content (TOC) , if you want to change the look and other setting of the TOC you need to edit it.

For editing TOC Follow the step given below

1)) First you have to Right-click anywhere inside the TOC.

2)) Select the Edit table of content command from the text menu (Right- click on the table)

3)) In the Index or table of content tab you can changes the Title of the table of content and so on.

Updating And Deleting The Table of content

After doing all if you want to make changes to the text within the heading or to add/delete one, these changes do not automatically appear in the table of content (TOC). So far applying the changes and updates the TOC, you need to select the Update index or Table Of Contents command from the content menu. Similarly for deleting the TOC, you need to select Delete Index or Table of contents command.

Steps for updating, Deleting table of content -

Once new heading are added, to update the table of content follow below steps.

1)) Right click on top of the of content and click update Index.

2)) The Entire table of content would be updated with the the headings from the entire document.

3)) To delete the of contents, click on the Delete Index.
